Michael Jordan 1996: 44pts, Pippen 40pts Vs. Pacers

Written on April 16th, 2010 by admin25 shouts

This was one of the most memorable regular games ever. With the Bulls on a quest to win 70 games, the Pacers were peaking on their own and were becoming formidable rivals in the East. MJ was being ‘criticized’ from insulated sportswriters for not being as ‘aerial’ as he was before his retirement and you knew he was seething. While in public MJ was his usual politically correct self, in private, rumor had it that he was quietly angered. Here, MJ’s mind games were on full display. While telling Dr. J in the pregame interview that may have lost a step in athleticism, he immediately dominated the game with the very same athleticism he supposedly may have lost. As usual, the mental card was handed just to add the extra challenge MJ needed to fight the boredom of constant supremacy. Of course, in this game, Pip would turn out to be a monster as well with 40 points. He attacked perfectly in conjunction with MJ’s usual excellence. The loudness of the crowd gave it a playoff atmosphere and of course, MJ’s aerial assault at age 33 reminded us all of his days before.

Michael Jordan 1996: 46pts Vs. Washington Bullets

Written on April 15th, 2010 by admin25 shouts

There really seemed to be no reason for MJ to come out against the mediocre Bullets with this sort of tenacity. But watching the game closely, it seemed MJ purposely set up his jumpers in order to open up his drives to challenge the 7-7 Muresan for a dunk. Big Men were just the main course during MJ’s reign and Muresan just came along a little to late for his own good. There was no doubt that MJ made several attacks with Muresan on his mind but the collapsing Washington defense averted a few embarrassing moments for the Big Guy. But, nevertheless, with 46pts on 52% shooting and the cool victory, MJ still had plenty to be happy with. This performance was sandwiched inside an 11-game span where MJ averaged 55.1% with a low of 50% and a high of 64.3% while scoring 27-48 points per game for a 36.2ppg average. But then again, considering a career that spanned 1072 games at 50% and 30.1ppg, that’s just a normal drop in the bucket.
